“Five
Bandits”

Thespringsunwaswarm,thedaypleasant,thewindgentle,thecloudsfloatingby.The

five bandits, each brandishing a golf club, each determined to win, set out to display their

miraculousskills.Thefirstbanditsteppedforth,theonecalledthebusinesstycoon,wearinga

custommade suit tailored of banknotes, a hat made of banknotes, shoes made of banknotes

andglovesknittedofbanknotes,withagoldwatch,goldrings,goldbuttons,agoldnecktiepin,

goldcufflinks,agoldbuckle,goldenteeth,goldennails,goldentoenails,andgoldenzippers,

withagoldenwatchchaindanglingfromhiswigglingass.

NowthesecondbanditstepsforthwithhiscroniesfromtheNationalAssembly.Here

comehunchbacks,alleyfoxes,angrydogs,andmonkeys.Hunchedatthewaist,theireyesareas

narrowandslantedasTs’aoTs’ao.


Lumbering,rasping,coveringtheirhairybodieswiththe

emptyoathsofrevolution,coughingupmucus,raisingtheirgolfclubshighintotheskylike

flags,thunderouslyyellingslogans,rollingonvipercoloredjaggedfloors:

Revolution,fromoldeviltonewevil!

Renovation,fromillegalprofiteeringtoprofiteeringillegally!

Modernization,fromunfairelectionstoelectionsunfair!

Nowthethirdbanditemerges,lookinglikearubberballoonwithviperouspointedeyes,

hislipsfirmlyclosed.Portrayingacleangovernmentofficial,whensweetsareoffered,heshows

thathedoesn’tlikethembyshakinghishead.Indeed,itmustbetrue.Butlookatthisfellow’s

other face. He snoops here and smiles there, stout, impudent, sly; his teeth are crooked and

blackfromanoverindulgenceinsweets,wornoutuntiltheycoulddecaynomore.

Hesitsinawidechairasdeepasthesea,beforeadeskashighasthesky,saying“no

thankyou”withonehandand“thankyou”withtheother.Hecannotdopossiblethings,buthe

candoimpossiblethings;hehaspilesofdocumentsontopofhisdeskandbundlesofmoney

under it. He acts like an obedient shaggy dog when flattering superiors, but like a snarling

hunting dog to subordinates. He puts public funds into his left pocket and bribes for favors

doneintohisrightpocket.Hisface,aperpetualmaskofinnocence,conveyspurity—thepurity ofawhitecloud.Hisallconsumingpassionisaskingafterthewellbeingofmadamsofdeluxe

restaurants.

The fourth bandit steps forth, a big gorilla. He is tall, reaching almost to the heavens.

ThemarchingcolumnofsoldiersunderhiscommandisaslongasChina’sGreatWall.Hehas

whitetintedeyes,atiger’smouth,awidenose,andashaggybeard;hemustbeananimal.His

breastisadornedwithcolorfulmedalsmadeofgold,silver,whitecopper,bronze,andbrass.

Blackpistolsclingtohisbody.

Hesoldthesacksofricemeanttofeedthesoldiers,andfilledthesackswithsand.He

stolethecowsandpigstobefedtothesoldiers,andgaveahairtoeachman.Nobarracksfor

the poor enlisted men in a bitterly cold winter; instead, hard labor all day to keep them

sweating.Lumberfortheconstructionofbarrackswasusedforbuildingthegeneral’squarters.

Sparepartsforvehicles,uniforms,anthracitebriquettes,monthlyallowances,allwerestolen.In

accordance with military law, soldiers who deserted their units because of hunger and

desperation were arrested, beaten and thrown into the brig, and harassed under orders.

Universitystudentssummonedformilitaryservicewereassignedtothegeneral’squartersas

living toys for his wanton wife. Meanwhile the general enjoyed his cleverly camouflaged life

withanunendingstreamofconcubines.

Nowthelastbanditandhiscroniesstepout:ministersandviceministers,whowaddle

fromobesity,sedimentseepingfromeverypore.Withshiftymucuslinedeyes,theycommand

thenationaldefensewithgolfclubsintheirlefthands,whilefondlingthetitsoftheirmistresses

with their right. And, when they softly write “Increased Production, Increased Export and

Construction” on a mistress’s tits, the woman murmurs “Heeheehee, don’t tickle me!” And

they jokingly reproach: “You ignorant woman, do national affairs make you laugh?” Let’s

exporteventhoughwestarve,let’sincreaseproductioneventhoughproductsgounsold.Let’s

constructabridgeacrosstheStraitofKoreawiththebonesofthosewhohavestarvedtodeath,

sowecanworshipthegodofJapan!Likeslavemastersofoldentimes,theydrivethepeopleto

workharderandlonger,withthebeatingofburstdrumsandthesoundsofbrokentrumpets,

withoneaiminmind:toincreasetheirownwealth.
